Toilet Leaks
A minor toilet leak can be
the major cause behind high water bills. 90% of the complaints related to high
water bills are due to leaking toilets. Generally, people do not pay much of
attention to Toilet leaks. If a tap is dripping continuously, it is so annoying
that one cannot possibly ignore it, but the toilet leaks often go unnoticed.
Many people ignore problems related to leaking toilets and are then stunned by
the high water bill amount. Toilet leaks are difficult to detect but there are
some ways to detect the leak yourself.
If your water bill has
suddenly increased, there is no doubt that there is some sort of water leakage
in the house. First check your toilets, if there is any sort of leakage, get it
repaired immediately. A defective flush valve is the major cause of toilet
leaks. If the ball valve is not fitted properly to form a tight seal, water will
start leaking. Water is not supposed to move from the tank to the bowl on its
own, if that is happening, there is a leak in your toilet. At times, it is
possible that there is a crack somewhere in the tank; in that case the tank has
to be replaced with a new one. There is a very simple way of detecting a
defective flush valve – remove the tank lid and flush so that the entire tank is
now empty, now add a food color or a leak detector tablet from any of the kits
available in market, and wait for 15-20 minutes. If the flush tank is leaking
then the colored water will appear in the toilet bowl.
Sometimes the water starts
over flowing if the ball cock valve is broken or not adjusted properly. A toilet
that does not get filled up properly after being flushed is a surely not
functioning properly and needs immediate attention, i.e. the valves should be
removed immediately. If you have to flush more than once to clear the toilet
bowl, then there is either a problem with the flapper or the water level in the
tank should be checked.
Parts of any toilet valve
can get damaged, and if such a thing happens, one should immediately get the
parts replaced. In order to replace a part first turn off the water supply to
the tank, then flush the toilet so that the tank is empty. All replacement parts
are easily available in the hardware store and usually there is an installation
guide with each product which gives step-by-step instructions on installation
procedure. After replacing the defective part test the toilet by flushing it
once or twice and perform the dye test again to check if the water in the tank
is not unnecessarily flowing into the toilet bowl.
