Installation of your rainwater storage tank couldn’t be simpler and what’s more, Call the Plumber (Tel. 1800 65 92 30) can undertake the whole process for you. Remember, only installations carried out by a fully licensed plumber will be eligible for the available rebates.

The first thing you need to consider is the best position of your tank. It will need to be located near to one of your downspouts so that it catches the run-off when it rains. Once you’ve selected the right site, the ground will need some preparation before installation. The ground must be level and flat and it must have a stable surface to prevent subsidence or sinking as the tank fills.

There are two options for the ground surface material for the tank site: concrete and crusher dust. If using concrete, it needs to be laid at thickness of 100mm. It needs to be reinforced with F32 mesh and trowel finished. If using crusher dust, the ground soil should be dug out to a depth of 100mm and ensure that the excavation is level and flat. Then fill with 75mm of crusher dust mixed with dry cement at a ratio of 3 bags for 4 metres of base width.

Spread the mix out, level, then compact using a mechanical plate compactor. It is not sufficient to compact by hand. Then rake the finished surface to ensure it is perfectly level. The crusher dust base must be 300mm wider in diameter than the tank. There is no need to wet the base to set the cement powder as the natural ground moisture will do this over time. Please note that slimline tanks should always be installed in a concrete base.

Once the site is prepared the tank can be brought into position ready for the pipe-work to be fitted. To do this, firstly remove the existing down pipe from the gutter that is going to feed the tank. Then, using 90mm PVC pipe, pipe-bends and a downpipe adapter create a new pipe leading from the existing gutter aperture to the inlet of the storage tank, using PVC solvent cement on all joints.

It is advisable to install an inline First Flush Diverter within the new downpipe to remove any debris and solids washed from the gutter that could contaminate your tank water.

The next step is to create the overflow outlet pipe that will take excess water into the existing storm water drain. Again, using 90mm PVC piping, and pipe-bends, run new piping from the tank’s overflow outlet to the drain or stormwater system. Use PVC solvent cement on all joints. It may be necessary to alter the existing aperture into the stormwater system.

Next, you need to screw in the correct size brass ball valve at the base of the rainwater tank using Teflon plumbers’ tape to seal the thread. Depending upon which particular tank you have there may be two outlets at the base of the tank and you may need two ball valves. Then connect your pump up to this ball valve tank using the correct size pipe and fittings and install a rainwater gauge so that you see the level of the water in your tank.

Now the pump is ready to be connected to the point of use. Polythene pipe and pipe-fittings can be used for this connection. A sediment filter should be used immediately after the pump to remove unwanted solids from the water which may cause the toilet inlet valves and washing machine solenoid to fail.

Finally, plug the pump into the power point and turn the power on. The pump should be covered with a polythene cover to protect it from the rain and to reduce pump noise.
