How To Harvest Rainwater
How to harvest rainwater?
In order to harvest rainwater one should install a set up which is able to
collect the rain water, transport it to the rainwater storage tanks and then
pump the stored water through the pipes so that it is available where it is
required. The set up is simple but the size and quality of the components is
decided by the purpose with which rainwater harvesting system in installed. Each
and every component of the rainwater storage system contributes to the quality
of the water stored.
The first component of a rainwater harvesting system is the catchment area that
is used to collect water. Rainwater is captured and transported through gutters
and pipes to the rainwater storage tanks. One must ensure that the catchment
area is made of materials that are absolutely safe for water collection. For
example, one should avoid using painted rooftops for collecting water as the
paints can contaminate the water thereby making is unsafe for drinking and
irrigation. Similarly, the gutters and pipes that are used for transporting
water should be kept clean, so that the water is not contaminated.
The
rainwater storage tank is used to store rainwater till the time it is further
required. These tanks are available in various sizes. The rainwater tanks are
also available in different materials. It all depends on the need of the
owner. For what purpose one wants to install a rainwater tank and how much water
is required to be stored are some of the deciding factors for the quality and
size of rainwater tank that will be used in the rainwater harvesting system.
Again
depending upon the owner’s requirement the rainwater storage system can be
installed above or below the ground. If one has sufficient space to accommodate
a rainwater tank above the ground, well and good else the tank can also be
installed under the ground. The maintenance of rainwater tank becomes easy if it
is installed above the ground plus it costs less than installation of
underground rainwater storage tanks. However the underground water storage saves
a lot of space maintains water at low temperature and has its own set of
advantages. Usually a pumping mechanism is also required to pump water from the
tank to the pipes so that it is available for use. Once the rainwater level goes
low in the rainwater storage tank, one can switch to the mains supply by
switching off the pump. Rainwater harvesting setup is simple but it is best to
consult professional for selection and implementation of right components.
