Domestic Rainwater Harvesting
Domestic Rainwater Harvesting
Domestic rainwater harvesting systems are being
implemented to conserve water, to eliminate dependency on mains water supply as
well as to reduce the water bills. The water can be used for drinking and non
drinking purposes. Ideally a domestic rainwater harvesting system consists of a
catchment area, water transportation mechanism, water filtration and storage
mechanism and water extraction device. If the rooftop has to be used as
catchment surface, ideal materials are galvanized iron, plastic sheets,
unpainted surfaces, cement and thatched roof made of palm leaves. The gutter and
the drain pipes should be kept clean, if the gutter is made of timber or bamboo,
then material should be regularly replaced. If the timber components have been
treated with pesticides they should never come in contact with the water.
The
quality of water that is finally available for use depends on the quality of
components that make the domestic rainwater harvesting system. The material used
in the catchment decides how much water can be collected by the surface area. A
well constructed gutter system is very important as the water is transported to
the rainwater storage tanks via the gutters and pipelines. Gutters should be
made up of good material so that there is no contamination of water on its way
to the rainwater storage tank. Filter screens are used to filter out pollutants
such as bird droppings, dead insects etc from the water that is collected. If
the water has to be stored for drinking purposes, first flush mechanism should
be implemented to drain out first few litres of rainwater.
The rainwater storage
tanks can be installed above the ground or under the ground depending upon the
requirement. Underground rainwater storage tanks save a lot of space but they
have to be installed carefully so that they are not harmed by external factors
such as tree roots or rise in groundwater level. Good quality rainwater storage
tanks should be used for rainwater storage systems. The tank should be strong
and should not allow evaporation or seepage of water. It should be made of good
material and should be durable and corrosion free. The water tank should have
opaque exteriors to avoid algal growth and smooth walls so that there are no
deposits. It is very necessary to maintain good hygiene so that there is no
mosquito breeding in the stored water.
