Recirculating Hot Water Systems

Recirculating Hot Water System: Overview

In a recirculating hot water system, a pump rapidly moves or distributes water from a water heater to fixtures and water outlets. A recirculating hot water system quickly delivers hot water to water outlets. It does this without even waiting for the water to get hot. Rather than relying on low pressure that moves water in water lines, it uses a pump to quickly move water to fixtures. A recirculating hot water system could be activated by a button, thermostat, timer or motion sensor. A thermostat instantly turns on the pump whenever the temperature of water drops below a set point. A timer activates the system after certain period. The main purpose of a recirculating hot water system is to deliver hot water without having to wait longer. They also help in conserving water that is lost or not used while waiting for the water to get hot.

Recirculating Hot Water System: Mechanism and Other Facts

A recirculating hot water system rapidly pulls hot water from a water heater source. As it does this, it simultaneously sends cooled off water from the water lines back to the water heater in order to be reheated. A recirculating hot water system does not only provide an unlimited supply of hot water but also helps save water and energy. It generally consists of a pump, a zone valve, and an integrated electronic controller. When a recirculating hot water system is turned on by a button, thermostat, or some other mechanism, the pump starts to send cooled off water in the water line back to the water heater for reheating. When the water reaches a desired or set temperature, a control closes the zone valve and turn off the pump. Instead of letting cool water go down the drain, it sends it back to the water heater to be reheated and used. Because of this cycle, hot water is readily available when the hot water tap or outlet is turned off.
