Electric Hot Water Heaters

Electric Hot Water Heater: Overview

Basically, a constant supply of hot water is essential to our everyday life. Hot water is typically used for domestic cooking, bathing, cleaning and many other applications. These examples prove just how useful hot water could be. Therefore, it is very important to have an available and steady supply of hot water in our homes or industries.

Water heating is a thermodynamic process which involves the use of an energy source to heat water beyond its initial or room temperature. For many years, new technology has been developed to improve and make water heating more efficient. Electric hot water heater systems are the most commonly used household water heating devices today. Most tank-type electric hot water heater units have two thermostats located close to the top and bottom of the tank.

Electric Hot Water Heater: Compared to Gas Heaters

Electric hot water heater units offer a great deal of advantages as opposed to conventional fuel-fired water heating systems. These water heating devices are generally safer than fuel-fired water heaters which pose considerable risks with their combustible vapours. Surely no one wants to be at risk for accidental flame ignition or inhalation of potentially toxic gases such as carbon monoxide. Electric hot water heater units also offer lower standby heat loss because of improved insulation.

However, electric hot water heater units require higher operation costs than conventional heaters. But even with this, its numerous advantages could easily outweigh any operation cost differences.

Electric Hot Water Heater: Kinds

There are generally two kinds of electric hot water heater systems. The older of these two are the tank-type models. This system uses a tank which is normally manufactured from steel with built in insulating mechanism which ideally keeps the warm or hot temperature at a constant. This type also offers lower cost as compared to the second type.

The second type of electric hot water heater units is the tankless models. This is generally a new technology which employs heating coils. These coils are used to heat flowing water which means that it only heats water on demand. It does not store and maintain any hot water which consequently lessens electrical consumption.
