The upper thermostat has a high limit switch, which trips once water gets too hot, which shuts off the electric supply. The tripping of the upper limit switch is the indication of some problem.
Electric hot water tanks:
Electric hot water tanks have an insulated cylinder/tank to heat water. Most of the households use a 40 to 60 gallon water heater. A typical tank is of steel lined with glass; some higher-end models have stainless steel linings. The magnesium or aluminum rods are used as anodes. The warranty of this tank is important as it has a direst relationship with heat transfer, insulation and heating elements. These are beneficial because of the low cost.
Tankless electric water heaters:
Tankless electric water heaters are slowly replacing the traditional heater tanks. These heaters use heating coils to heat water. The unit is attached with sensors that signal the unit when a tap in the house is turned on. The water passes through the pipe, which passes through the heating unit. The water in the unit is then heated to a specific temperature and reaches you.
